Part 3 of the 3-Part Series: Setting Family Goals
Setting goals as a family is an amazing way to create unity, peace, and purpose in your home—but let’s be real: staying motivated to follow through on those goals can be challenging.
When life gets busy, it’s easy for enthusiasm to fade, and those goals can quickly become something we set aside for “later.” But staying on track doesn’t have to feel impossible. With the right strategies, your family can stay motivated, celebrate progress, and create lasting habits that reflect what truly matters to you.

3 Strategies to Stay Motivated as a Family
Here are three practical ways to keep your family inspired and focused on your shared goals:
1️⃣ Create Visual Reminders
The saying “out of sight, out of mind” is so true when it comes to goals. Keeping your goals visible is a simple yet powerful way to make them part of your everyday life.
Ideas for Visual Reminders:
- Write your family goals on a whiteboard or poster and display them in a central location, like the kitchen or living room.
- Use a checklist or chart to track progress. For example, if your goal is to memorize scripture, create a tracker for each family member’s progress.
- Let your kids decorate a goal tracker to make it fun and personal!
When your family can see your goals daily, they’ll stay front and center—and more achievable.
2️⃣ Make it Fun and Flexible
Motivation doesn’t mean being rigid. In fact, the more fun and flexibility you add to the process, the more likely your family is to stay engaged.
Ideas to Make Goals Fun and Flexible:
- Turn goals into challenges: See how many acts of kindness your family can do in a week or time yourselves completing a task.
- Add rewards: Celebrate milestones with special treats, like a family outing or movie night.
- Be flexible: If a goal isn’t working, adjust it to better fit your family’s needs and schedule.
The goal is progress, not perfection. When your family feels encouraged instead of pressured, they’ll stay motivated to keep going.
3️⃣ Celebrate Every Win
Celebrating progress—no matter how small—is one of the best ways to keep motivation high.
Ways to Celebrate Wins:
- Acknowledge progress: Point out the good things your kids are doing, even if they’re small steps.
- Share your excitement: Show your family how proud you are of their efforts and encourage them to keep going.
- Reflect together: At the end of each week, take time to talk about what went well and what you’re grateful for.
Celebrations create positive reinforcement, making it easier to stay on track and build lasting habits.
Personal Story: How Kindness Keeps Us Going
One of our family goals this year is practicing daily acts of kindness. As an introvert, this goal often pushes me out of my comfort zone—but my son, who is very outgoing, inspires me every day.
He constantly notices opportunities to show kindness that I might miss. Sometimes, he’ll ask, “Mommy, can I tell her I love her dress?” or “Mommy, can I give them a hug?” In situations where it’s safe and appropriate, I always encourage him to share his kind words or offer a hug.
These moments remind me to step outside my own comfort zone, too. Seeing his boldness encourages me to speak up and connect with others, even when it doesn’t come naturally.
And the impact? It’s incredible. At just five years old, my son has had people thank him, light up with joy, and tell us that his kindness completely made their day.
These little wins remind me why this goal matters. They motivate me to keep encouraging his natural kindness and inspire me to stretch myself as well. Even on busy or overwhelming days, these moments show us that our goals are more than checkboxes—they’re ripples of positivity that reflect God’s love.
Biblical Perspective: Perseverance in Faith
Galatians 6:9 says: “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
This verse reminds us that perseverance pays off, even when the work is hard.
The story of Nehemiah illustrates this beautifully. When Nehemiah led the Israelites in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, they faced incredible opposition. Neighboring groups mocked them, threatened them, and even plotted to attack. The people grew discouraged and exhausted as the enormity of the task set in.
But Nehemiah didn’t let them give up. He reminded them of their purpose: that they were rebuilding the walls to honor God and protect their community. He organized the people into teams, assigning families specific sections of the wall to rebuild. He even set guards to protect the workers, ensuring they stayed focused and safe.
Through perseverance and faith, the wall was completed in just 52 days—a remarkable achievement that reflected God’s glory.
In the same way, we can keep our families motivated by focusing on the bigger picture. We’re not just building routines or habits—we’re building legacies of faith, love, and purpose that will endure for generations.
Celebrate a Win: This Week’s Challenge
This week, I encourage you to take time to celebrate a family win. It could be reaching a goal, taking a small step forward, or even just the effort your family is putting in.
Talk about it together, give thanks to God, and use that moment to inspire the next step forward.
