How to Set Goals as a Family

Part 2 of the 3-Part Series: Setting Family Goals

Do you ever feel like your family is running in a million different directions? Life gets busy, and it’s easy to focus on individual tasks without stepping back to look at the bigger picture. That’s where family goals come in.

In this blog, we’re diving into how to set meaningful goals as a family. Whether you’re new to family goal-setting or just need a refresh, I’ll share simple steps to help you create a shared vision that brings unity, peace, and purpose to your home.

Step 1: Hold a Family Goal-Setting Meeting

The first step is to gather everyone together. A family meeting is your chance to get on the same page, talk about what matters most, and create a shared vision.

Here’s how to set the tone:

  • Make it fun: Set up a cozy space, have snacks, or play some upbeat music to make it an enjoyable experience.
  • Explain the purpose: Share why setting family goals is important and how it helps you work together as a team.
  • Start with prayer: Ask God to guide your family as you create goals that align with His purpose for your lives.

During the meeting, ask these questions to spark conversation:

  • What’s most important to us as a family?
  • How can we grow together in faith, relationships, and personal development?
  • What goals could we set to make this year meaningful?

Step 2: Choose Meaningful Goals

Now it’s time to get specific. Your family goals should reflect your values while giving you something achievable to work toward.

Tips for setting meaningful goals:

  1. Cover different areas: Think about spiritual, physical, relational, and practical goals.
  2. Be realistic: Goals should challenge you, but they also need to be achievable.
  3. Involve everyone: Let each family member contribute ideas to ensure buy-in and ownership.

Examples of family goals:

  • Memorize one scripture verse together each month.
  • Commit to a weekly family devotion night.
  • Plan one act of kindness to do as a family each week.
  • Eat dinner together at the table three times a week.
  • Start a new bedtime routine that includes prayer and reflection.

Step 3: Write Them Down and Create a Plan

It’s not enough to just talk about goals—you need to make them visible and actionable.

Here’s how to bring your goals to life:

  • Write them down somewhere everyone can see, like a whiteboard, poster, or family journal.
  • Assign roles to each person so everyone feels involved. For example, one person can choose the weekly devotion, and another can plan an act of kindness.
  • Break goals into small, actionable steps to make them easier to accomplish.

When you’re intentional about planning, your goals become part of your daily life instead of just ideas.

Flexibility is Key: A Personal Story

When I decided to set goals and build routines for my family this year, I started by reflecting on our values. Faith is a big one for us, along with spending intentional time together, learning new things, and making healthier choices like eating better and staying active.

One thing I’ve learned is that goals don’t have to be rigid. They can be flexible and still meaningful.

For example, I like to get up early and walk a mile in the mornings, then do a 20–30 minute workout in the evenings. My son, on the other hand, prefers high-energy activities for his physical time. But he’s also a mama’s boy who loves to “help me,” so we’ve found ways to combine our goals.

When I’m working out, he often joins in by doing the exercises with me or counting my reps. Those moments aren’t just productive—they’re fun! During rest breaks, we’ll chat, laugh, and connect. On busy days, that time together can check off several of his daily goals: something helpful, something physical, and intentional time with me.

Even though our routines are different, we’re working toward the same values. When someone else is on board with your goals, you get built-in accountability. We both feel a sense of accomplishment as we build good habits and encourage each other.

That’s the beauty of family goals—they strengthen your bond and help you align your time with what matters most.

Biblical Perspective: God’s Design for Collaboration

Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

God designed families to work together. We see this beautifully illustrated in the story of Nehemiah.

When Nehemiah set out to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, he didn’t work alone. In Nehemiah 3, families were assigned specific sections of the wall to rebuild. Fathers worked alongside their sons and daughters, and each family played a vital role in the project’s success.

This story reminds us that collaboration brings unity, purpose, and accountability. When we set goals as a family, we’re modeling biblical principles of teamwork and faith. Every member of the family has a role to play, and together, we can accomplish incredible things for God’s glory.

Why Family Goals Matter

When you set goals as a family, you’re doing more than checking things off a to-do list. You’re building connection, teaching your kids to live with intention, and creating a home filled with peace and purpose.

Here’s why it works:

  1. It strengthens your bond: Working toward shared goals brings you closer together.
  2. It teaches kids valuable life skills: They learn the importance of intention, discipline, and follow-through.
  3. It brings peace to your home: Instead of chaos, you have a clear direction and focus.

Start Small: A Quick Challenge

This week, I encourage you to set one shared goal with your family. It could be as simple as planning a family meal or reading a devotion together.

Write it down, pray about it, and take the first step toward making it happen.
