Uncovering the Real Obstacles

As a certified youth, parenting and family coach, I am typically working with clients who come to me with a specific issue they're struggling with.
They believe that this issue is the primary obstacle they need to overcome.
However, as we delve deeper into their situation, their top concerns, and their top challenges in overcoming them, we often discover that the real area that needs attention is something different.
One of the most powerful aspects of coaching is its ability to help clients zoom out and see the bigger picture. It's not uncommon for someone to come in with a particular problem, only to realize that the root cause of their struggle lies elsewhere.
This realization can be a game-changer, as it allows them to address the underlying issue and make more significant progress towards their goals.
If you've been working towards overcoming a challenge for awhile and are hitting a wall, becoming frustrated, or starting to feel defeated.. There is a good chance you are missing something that must be addressed first. You will have much greater success at tackling your obvious obstacle, if you zoom out and list each thing that could be stopping you, and then the best first step towards removing that roadblock.
For instance, I am currenting working with a client who came to me for assistance in navigating co-parenting challenges with a high-conflict ex-partner.
He was feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and defeated, struggling to find common ground with his co-parent.
As we began our coaching journey, it became clear that the co-parenting issue, while significant, was not the primary obstacle he needed to overcome in order to release himself from these feelings.
During one of our sessions, he had a breakthrough. He realized that he had been neglecting his own needs and well-being for quite some time. His self-esteem had taken a hit, and he had lost the energy and focus needed to effectively tackle the co-parenting issue.
His self-care had completely taken a backburner. This realization was a turning point for him. He realized that before he could effectively take on the co-parenting concerns, he needed to rebuild his confidence and focus. He needed to take care of himself first.
This shift in perspective will allow him to approach the co-parenting issue with renewed energy, clarity and a more positive mindset.
It's normal to shift gears from time to time throughout your sessions. Your coach should be there to help you get closer to your vision for yourself and your family, and that is often not a linear process.
This is relevant with or without a coach in your life.
If you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed by a particular problem, I encourage you to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. What other areas of your life might be affecting your ability to overcome this obstacle? Are there any underlying issues that need your attention first?
Here are a few steps to help you identify your true first step:
1. Reflect on your current situation: What are the challenges you're facing? How are they affecting you and your family?
2. Identify your goals: What is your vision for yourself and your family? What are the top parenting goals you want to achieve?
3. Look for underlying issues: Are there any underlying issues that might be affecting your ability to reach your goals?
4. Prioritize your needs: What do you need to focus on first in order to move closer to your goals? Remember, it's okay to ask for help.
I'm happy to guide you through this process and help you uncover the real obstacles standing in your way. If you need assistance with anything further, don't hesitate to reach out. Together, we can work towards overcoming these challenges and moving closer to your goals. In the end, coaching is not just about solving problems. It's about personal growth, self-discovery, and empowering you to become the best version of yourself. And sometimes, that journey begins with uncovering the real obstacles standing in your way.
